Goals of the Program

  • Training in theory-based principles of pedagogy, assessment and evaluation, interprofessionalism, leadership, and McMaster’s Faculty of Health Science signature curriculum (e.g. concept based learning) in course content, learning strategies and activities
  • Enables knowledge, academic scholarship and research pertaining to health science education
  • Preparedness for advanced professional and inter-professional academic roles including educational leadership roles across the health sciences
  • Application of evidence-based education in the fields and communities of our students
  • Accessible format for practicing health professionals working in diverse settings, locally and internationally, by offering both full and part time options
  • Interactive learning strategies in classroom (residency) and online course-based learning
  • Prepares students for further education, e.g. PhD, by providing a thesis-based option

Skills Students will Gain

  • Knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum designs and teaching strategy fundamentals in health science education
  • Educational leadership skills in health science education including decision-making in complex situations, intellectual independence required for continuing professional development
  • Conceptual understanding and application of methodologies demonstrating competence
  • Practical application of theoretical frameworks to area of practice
  • Application of an existing body of knowledge in the critical analysis of a new question or a specific problem or issue in a new setting through the presentation of scholarly work or thesis
  • Written and oral communication skills related to health science education
  • Understanding and awareness of the complexity of the knowledge and potential contributions of other interpretations, methods and disciplines in health science education
